Dr Aoife Guerin is currently an Educational Developer in the CTL, working in the Mathematics Learning Centre (MLC). She has a BSc (Hons) in Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Science, a Postgraduate Diploma (Hons) in Mathematics Education and a PhD in Mathematics Education (2017).

As part of her role in the MLC, Aoife supports students’ learning of mathematics across the university. Aoife designs, implements, evaluates and reports on MLC support services for UL students and collaborates with internal and external partners in outreach activities. She teaches two mathematics modules on the International Foundation Programme and in collaboration with her colleague Dr Richard Walsh, she delivers a mathematics tutor-training programme with UL mathematics tutors. Aoife collaborates with colleagues in the faculty of Education and Professional Studies in delivering a workshop on mathematical thinking and problem solving to Professional Masters in Education (Mathematics) students. Aoife also collaborates with EPISTEM National Centre for STEM Education in their work on developing mathematics supplements, which are called ‘Sum-It’, for senior cycle post-primary students. These supplements are distributed by the Irish Independent to schools nationwide and are aimed at developing conceptual understanding though the use of realistic problem situations. Aoife is an active researcher in the area of mathematics education and is a committee member of the Irish Mathematics Learning Support Network (IMLSN). She is currently serving as PRO of the IMLSN since June 2020.

Aoife’s research interests include:

• Problem Solving, Mathematical thinking, and Modelling

• The learning and teaching of mathematics in Higher Education (HE)

• Mathematics Learning Support in HE

• Mathematics teacher (post-primary) education and the learning and teaching of mathematics at post-primary level.

• Mindset towards mathematics
