With the support of Limerick Smarter Travel, the University is committed to the promotion of sustainable modes of transport.
Walking
University of Limerick is located approximately 4km east of Limerick City Centre. There are two main options for accessing the University from the City Centre by foot, each taking about 50 minutes:
- Along the Dublin Road and Plassey Park Road
- Along the canal and river bank
Cycling
Access to and around the University is easy on a bicycle.
Cycling facilities outside and inside the campus have been constructed as a response to the recent increase in the number of cyclists travelling to the campus.
Bus
A number of local and regional buses serve University of Limerick.
Most daily services from the City Centre to UL depart from Lower William Street at regular intervals.
There are also buses available to major airports and other towns and cities across the country.
Train
Colbert Station is Limerick’s main train and bus station, located on Parnell Street, about a 10‑minute walk from the city centre.
It is approximately 6km from University of Limerick, with a travel time of 10–15 minutes by car.
Direct bus services run frequently between UL and the city, reaching the station area in 17–18 minutes.
Regular train services operate to Dublin, Cork (via Limerick Junction), Galway, Ennis, and Waterford (via Limerick Junction).
Car
UL is easily accessed by car through its Main Entrance and East Gate Entrance, both located off Plassey Park Road.
There are over 2,200 parking spaces on campus, including free open car parks, pay‑and‑display areas, reserved visitor spaces, and staff parking.
Visitors can use free parking near the Foundation Building, University Arena, Schuman Building, and the North Bank Car Park, or opt for paid parking near the Student Centre and Western Car Park (€3 per day).
Accessible parking is available across campus, with designated spaces in locations such as Cappavilla Village, Foundation Building, Maguires, Pavilion, Plassey House, and UL Arena.
Plane
The closest airport to University of Limerick is Shannon Airport, located about 24 km from Limerick City. It offers direct flights to destinations across the UK, Europe, and the US, including major hubs such as Heathrow, JFK, Newark, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Boston.
Dublin Airport is another major option, approximately 192km from Limerick, with extensive international connections. Several bus operators provide direct services from Dublin Airport to Limerick and even directly to the UL campus.
From Shannon Airport, frequent bus and taxi services run to Limerick City, and onward connections to UL are readily available. Taxi and airport transfer desks are located in the Arrivals Hall.
Ferry
While there is no direct ferry service into Limerick, it is easy to reach University of Limerick by sailing into one of Ireland’s main ferry ports and continuing your journey by road or public transport.
The most commonly used routes for travellers heading to Limerick are:
- Dublin Port, which receives frequent sailings from the UK and Europe and offers quick access to Ireland’s motorway network, including the M7 route to Limerick.
- Rosslare Europort, connected to Wales and France, with direct road links across the south and southwest of Ireland.
After disembarking, travellers can continue to Limerick by car, bus, or train. Dublin Port to Limerick takes around two to three hours depending on your chosen mode of transport.
Ferries to Ireland operate from the UK, France, and Spain, with major operators including Irish Ferries, Stena Line, and P&O Ferries
