Why study Business Studies at UL?

If you are interested in gaining expertise in a specific business discipline, the Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) (Hons) degree offers you a broad choice of options which will enhance your employability on graduation. The BBS degree at UL is among the most popular business courses in Ireland, partly owing to the Kemmy Business School achieving EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB accreditation, which means it is listed amongst the top 1% of business schools worldwide.

The Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) programme will provide you with a broad business education. You will study the core business principles of accounting, economics, risk management and insurance, human resource management and marketing - specialising in one area as your “major” in the second semester of Year 2. Under this ‘dual degree’ pathway, Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) students spend their first two years studying in Limerick and their last two years studying at another Business School (while retaining the benefits of UL arranged work placement). Our six partner institutions are located in France, Germany, Poland and Japan. Evan Mansfield

Evan Mansfield

I chose the Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) at UL as my number one option when filling out my CAO form. I was determined to become an accountant, as it was my favourite and best subject in secondary school. The BBS programme provided all CAP 1 exemptions to support my pursuit of becoming a Chartered Accountant while providing an elite, comprehensive education across all business areas. UL provides a diverse and interesting selection of subjects (modules) across all major and minor options. I found finance, economics, and my minor option, organisational psychology, particularly fascinating and engaging.

An aspect of the BBS programme I didn’t appreciate fully upon filling out my CAO was the option to spend a semester abroad (Erasmus). I received the opportunity to spend a semester at the University of Texas at Austin, the number one accounting school in America, through UL’s Erasmus programme. This experience was the best few months of my life. I made friends from Australia, America, and everywhere in between, and made memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life! This opportunity to experience a new culture, adjust and adapt to education in a new continent and meet new people did wonders for my self-confidence and has been formative in shaping who I am today.

University of Limerick’s Cooperative Education programme sets it apart from all Irish universities in terms of the employability of its graduates. I spent eight months working in PwC’s audit department, a Big-4 accounting firm. In this role, I worked with clients from small family-run businesses to large multi-million-dollar funds. I was completing important tasks, received a full wage, and had the opportunity to apply what I learned in class to real-world corporate scenarios. This opportunity allowed me to upskill in data analysis software, shaping my career journey massively, and I have now been accepted to UL’s MSc in Business Analytics programme for my postgraduate study. The UL Cooperative Education Division supports students through every step of this process, with regular check-ins, CV reviews, and help you find a job.

I have a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and UL has supported my needs in every way imaginable. The Disability Support Services have put numerous exam and academic supports in place, such as separate exam venue and additional time, grinds for challenging subjects and much more, tailored to my needs. These supports have all been put in place in the background, removing any extra stress and ensuring my UL experience is as enjoyable and accessible as possible.

Gearoid Hegarty

Having graduated with a Business degree, I stayed on at UL to study a Postgrad Masters in Education (PME) to become a Business Studies teacher. Through the PME, you will develop valuable classroom skills including communication and organisation. Although the course was initially challenging, it will provide you with the tools, values and knowledge that will prepare you to shape what may be the next generation of business leaders.

Becoming a teacher was something that always interested me. I saw teaching as a rewarding career, where you can really make a difference. Every day and every class is different. You get to make real use of everything you learned during your degree. I enjoy working with young people and bringing positivity into the classroom. One of the most important elements of teaching is building relationships with the students - you have the opportunity to make an impact and really get the best out of people.

Studying in UL prepared me very well for my career - I learned the importance of preparation, planning and effort. Overall, my experience has helped me to develop a growth mindset – an important and valuable trait as an educator of young people, I feel. Along with developing a career, I’ve also developed as a person. As I prepared to teach my first class in school, I was completely confident in the skills and knowledge I had learned at UL.

Gearoid is a graduate of both the Business and  Education faculties at UL. He is currently employed as a Business Studies teacher.

Ella O'Neill Branagan

As a 2nd Year student, I can confidently say that studying at the Kemmy Business School has been an incredible journey of personal and academic growth thus far. The positive aspects of college are truly endless, from the invaluable experiences gained through extracurricular activities, to the friendships formed and the knowledge acquired through coursework.

One of the most impactful aspects of university has been the opportunity to meet a diverse range of people from all walks of life. This has allowed me to broaden my perspective and learn about different cultures, beliefs, and values. KBS provides a valuable network of peers, mentors, and alumni who can support you throughout your academic and professional journey. The friendships and connections made in university can last a lifetime and can provide a wealth of opportunities and resources for future success. Through interacting with individuals who have different backgrounds and experiences, I have gained a greater sense of empathy and understanding.

Additionally, university has challenged me academically in ways that I never thought possible. The coursework has been rigorous and demanding, but it has pushed me to expand my intellectual abilities and develop new critical thinking skills. I have learned how to analyse complex information and present my ideas in a clear and effective manner. One of the greatest benefits of the KBS is that it the coursework truly provides the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills that are transferable to various aspects of life. Whether it is critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, or time-management, KBS provides a fertile ground for cultivating these skills. The ability to think critically and solve problems is essential in almost every career path, and the analytical and research skills gained through college can help you become a more effective problem-solver.

As a student at the KBS, I have been offered the opportunity to go on Dual Degree and study at the KEDGE Business School in Marseille for my 3rd and 4th year. This means that I will end my four-year course with a degree from UL with a Bachelor of Business Studies degree and an equivalent degree from KEDGE. This also means that I potentially could complete my co-op work placement in France. I am so grateful to be a part of this programme and am truly excited for what the future may bring.

Moreover, university has provided me with a plethora of opportunities to explore my interests and passions outside of the classroom. I have joined clubs and have taken part in various volunteering opportunities that have allowed me to give back to the school community. KBS provides an excellent platform for developing interpersonal and leadership skills. By joining clubs, volunteering, and student groups, you have the chance to work with a diverse group of people, build relationships, and develop your leadership abilities. These experiences are invaluable in shaping you as a well-rounded individual who can work effectively in teams and lead groups towards a common goal.

Being a student at the KBS is an incredible journey that provides a wealth of opportunities for personal and academic growth. It challenges you to think critically, develop leadership skills, and explore your passions and interests. It is a time of self-discovery and transformation that can shape you into a well-rounded individual who is prepared to take on the challenges of the world.
