I worked in the science area and as my career developed I realized that I was doing a lot more writing than I thought. So when I finished up at my job, I looked for a different career path and chose technical writing.

MA in Journalism: Graduate Profile - Tara McCormack

My name is Tara McCormack and I am from County Offaly, I decided last year that I wanted to go back and pursue journalism. I have been in radio for the last eight years, I actually got into radio during my undergraduate degree at UL which was the BA in English and media, as it was known at the time.

MA in Journalism: Graduate Profile - Mostafa Darwish

Mostafa is a graduate of the MA Journalism programme and is originally from Eygpt. Mostafa describes his experience of the programme and his delight at recently winning Student journalist of the Year 2020 at the Student Media Awards (SMEDIAs).

As part of the AHSS Professional Development Programme for postgraduate researchers, on 26 November 2019, the AHSS Graduate Research Centre organised a full day of seminars.

It was a busy schedule and the morning session consisted of an information session on ‘How to write an excellent conference paper’ followed by a session on ‘Developing an academic CV and letter of application for jobs/grants/funding’. The seminars were delivered by Dr Niamh Nic Ghabhann, Assistant Dean, Research who gave some well received tips and advice on preparing and delivering an academic conference paper as well as constructing an academic CV in preparation for job applications as well as applying for research funding opportunities.

The afternoon session was delivered jointly by Dr Niamh Nic Ghabhann and Dr Niamh Lenahan. Postgraduate researchers who registered within the last year were welcomed into the AHSS postgraduate community and informed on services available to them. This informal session began with tea/coffee and pastries and proved to be a good forum also for new entrants to meet with other postgraduates who are beginning on their research journeys together.

The events were organised by Dr Niamh Lenahan. The comments and feedback from attendees was very positive and looking forward to the next scheduled event which is due to take place on 28 January 2020 on ‘Writing an article/ chapter and writing a book proposal’.
