Creating knowledge and a better world

It is my very great pleasure to welcome you to the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) website. The synthesising impulse underpinning the diversity of subjects and disciplines in the Faculty is a concern with humanity and citizenship – what people and societies value, and how they live, communicate, experience themselves and their surroundings, govern their relations, and make ethical decisions and choices. The possibilities and opportunities presented by these disciplines are captured in the Faculty’s mission statement: ‘creating knowledge and a better world’

Exploring the richness of scholarship in our disciplines will help you to express creatively, to think critically, to reason, to raise questions, to communicate with clarity, to engage empathically, and to understand diversity and dimensions of difference. These are skills that are vital in our institutions, economies, work environments, and communities. They connect people, celebrate our cultures, foster creative and ethical thinking, challenge orthodoxy, and sustain (and re-imagine) our future.

The University of Limerick is ranked in the top 50 in the world in the Times Higher Education impact rankings (2021).  The University is also ranked 51-75 in the most recent Times Higher Education Europe Teaching Rankings with particularly high scores for its teaching environment, international outlook, student engagement, and preparation for their careers. The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is a core contributor to these results. We look forward to working with you in what is truly one of the most beautiful university campuses anywhere in the world.
