The MA offers a comprehensive grounding in the skills and knowledge needed to function as a successful community musician in a range of contexts. The course is aimed at musicians who want to extend or develop the abilities needed to facilitate the expressive work of others and work effectively with a wide range of people in diverse settings. Students attain practical perspectives and hands-on experiences in the emerging field of Community Music in conjunction with developing the skills required to realise projects from their inception to their final execution.

The Master of Arts in Community Music is a one year, full-time postgraduate programme. It offers a comprehensive grounding in the skills and knowledge needed to function as a successful community musician in a range of contexts. The course is aimed at musicians who want to extend or develop the abilities needed to facilitate the expressive work of others and work effectively with a wide range of people in diverse settings. Students attain practical perspectives and hands-on experiences in the emerging field of Community Music in conjunction with developing the skills required to realise projects from their inception to their final execution. The course includes: new music skills, groupwork, fundraising, evaluation, project development and entrepreneurism. The course considers and addresses the growing interest in Community Music throughout the world.

Primary degree in a suitable discipline with first or second class honours or an approved equivalent qualification (Primary degree: Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland). Or an equivalent capability based on prior professional experience.
A performance audition and interview will be required in all cases. Additional audio, visual or written material may be required.
Garda clearance is also required for this programme.

English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet one of the criteria below (no longer than two years prior to application):
Acceptable English Language qualifications include the following:
- Matriculation examinations from European countries where English is presented as a subject and an acceptable level is achieved
- Irish Leaving Certificate English –Ordinary Level Grade D or above
- TOEFL – 580 (paper based) or 90 (internet based)
- IELTS – Minimum score of 6.5 with no less than 6 in any one component.
- English Test for English and Academic Purposes (ETAPP) – Grade C1
- GCE ‘O’ level English Language/GCSE English Language – Grade C or above
- Cambridge Assessment English - Certificate of Proficiency in English - Grade C / Certificate in Advanced English Grade B
- GCE Examination Boards – Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations – Grade C / Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate – School Certificate Pass 1-6 / University of London Entrance and School Examinations Council – School Certificate Pass 1-6

Andrew Jordan, Graduate MA Community Music
Since completing the course, I have been able to develop and expand the work I do as co-director of the Redemptorist Centre of Music, Limerick City. The Redemptorist Centre of Music is a centre that provides people of all backgrounds access to music through a variety of different approaches and contexts. To date we work with almost 500 people on a weekly basis from our programmes for toddlers to our groups for older adults. Along with my practical work in community music I am also in the process of completing a PhD examining the work of Music Generation in Limerick City and exploring the ways in which music can be used as a tool for social change. Community Music has really provided a structure for how I view music, I feel it is a constantly developing area and one I am very proud to be part of. I would highly recommend the M.A. in Community Music programme!
