CAO Applicants

If you have been offered a place at the University of Limerick through this year's CAO, you may apply to defer this place for one year.  If your deferral application is granted, your place in your chosen course will be secured for the following year.

  1. If you plan to apply for deferral, do not go through the process of accepting your offer.
  2. Complete and submit our online deferral form indicating your reason for requesting a deferral.
  3. The outcome of your application will be communicated to you via email.
  4. If your deferral is denied, you may accept your initial offer for the current year, provided you do so before the “reply date.”

Please note:

  • Deferrals are normally not granted for Graduate Entry Medicine except in very extenuating circumstances.

Direct Applicants

Applicants who received an offer directly from the University of Limerick can apply for a deferral through the appropriate admissions office:

Occasionally, a sudden change of circumstances such as a bereavement or illness may cause a new student to be unable to continue in their chosen course.

If you are a first year student currently enrolled in a course at UL and wish to defer your place for one year, you must:

  1. Complete and submit our online deferral form indicating your reason for requesting a deferral by the end of week 3 of the semester.
  2. The outcome of your application will be communicated to you via email.

Please note:

  • Deferrals are normally not granted for Graduate Entry Medicine except in very extenuating circumstances.

Direct Applicants

Applicants who received an offer directly from the University of Limerick can apply for a deferral through the appropriate admissions office:

  • You will breach the conditions of your deferred place if you enter more than the single deferred course code on your application. In that event, you will forfeit the guaranteed place and enter the competition for places in the normal way.
  • When reapplying in the succeeding year, you must complete an application FULLY. In other words, you must include again any personal information and documentation, etc., which you provided with the original application (unless instructed otherwise in your deferral letter).
  • You can apply to defer entry on to your programme for one year
  • Taking up another CAO offer does not constitute grounds for deferral.
  • Deferrals are normally not granted for Graduate Entry Medicine except in very extenuating circumstances.

What you need to do:

To secure your deferred place in 2024, you need to complete the following:

  • Apply for your deferred course online through the Central Applications Office (CAO) by 01 February 2024. Late applications cannot be accepted.
  • Choose your deferred course as your only preference. If you enter any other preferences, at any level, your deferred place to the University of Limerick will be void.
  • Tick the Deferral Box on Page 2 of your CAO Application Form.

Please note:

  • If you decide to re-apply for other courses through the CAO in 2022, your deferred place will be forfeited. Your application will then be assessed based on 2022 entry requirements and points for those courses.

  • Please ensure that you quote your 2023 CAO number on all correspondence.

  • Your CAO deferred offer place will be issued in July 2024 before Round One offers.

If you have any queries relating to your deferred place, please use the Submit Deferral CAO application numbers and enquiry form
