Deferrals

CAO Applicants

If you have been offered a place at the University of Limerick through the CAO, you may apply to defer this place for one year.  If your deferral application is granted, your place in your chosen course will be secured for the following year.

Deadline: Up to 2 days before the “Reply Date” as shown on your Offer Notice.

  1. If you plan to apply for deferral, do not go through the process of accepting your offer.
  2. Complete and submit our online deferral form indicating your reason for requesting a deferral.
  3. The outcome of your application will be communicated to you via email.
  4. If your deferral is denied, you may accept your initial offer for the current year, provided you do so before the “reply date.”

Deadline: End of week 3 of Semester 1

Occasionally, a sudden change of circumstances such as a bereavement or illness may cause a new student to be unable to continue in their chosen course.
If you are a first year student currently enrolled in a course at UL and wish to defer your place for one year, you must:

  1. Complete and submit our online deferral form indicating your reason for requesting a deferral by the end of week 3 of the semester.
  2. The outcome of your application will be communicated to you via email.

In order to accept a place at UL that you deferred the previous year, you must:

  1. Carefully read the email granting you the deferred place. There may be important information or instructions in this regarding the acceptance process.
  2. Re-apply through the CAO and pay the appropriate application fee.
  3. Place your deferred course as your first and only preference on the application form.
  4. Tick the “deferred place” indicator box on the application.
  • You will breach the conditions of your deferred place if you enter more than the single deferred course code on your application. In that event, you will forfeit the guaranteed place and enter the competition for places in the normal way.
  • When reapplying in the succeeding year, you must complete an application FULLY. In other words, you must include again any personal information and documentation, etc., which you provided with the original application (unless instructed otherwise in your deferral letter).
  • You can apply to defer entry on to your programme for one year
  • Taking up another CAO offer does not constitute grounds for deferral.
