Why Postgraduate Research at UL?

Our postgraduate research students benefit from the experience of international researchers and the availability of state-of-the-art equipment at our research institutes and centres.

The Structured Masters by Research programme is designed to develop students’ research skills through a high-quality programme of supported and structured learning. Core taught modules will introduce the student to the postgraduate academic community and support the student in conducting high quality, ethical research. The students will also select a number of research and specialist modules from across the university which meets their learning needs and interests. A personal academic supervisor will guide the student in selecting the most appropriate modules. An original research thesis must be completed as part of the programme

The Faculty of Education and Health Sciences (EHS) provides a number of high-quality postgraduate programmes, including Structured PhD programmes, Professional Doctorates and Structured PhD programmes. Our postgraduate students are members of a wider research community – involving research-active academic staff and research specialists – within the faculty.

The aim is to advance the wellbeing of people by graduating effective and critically reflective scientists, education and healthcare professionals and creating and disseminating knowledge, through research and scholarship that impacts on the social, educational and healthcare needs of people locally, nationally and globally.

The multidisciplinary structure and expertise of the faculty provide research agendas around active management of lifelong ageing, biomedical sciences, clinical therapies, education, food & health, health sciences, physical activity, sport and sport sciences, professional preparation and development, social issues and political identity – all areas of national challenge.

EHS Postgraduate Progression Review Process

An annual progression review meeting is conducted with all postgraduate research students. The aim of the annual review of all sPhD, PhD and MRes students is to facilitate the support of research students, formalise monitoring and management of student progress, provide space to reflect on how PhD/MRes supervision is going, promote research excellence and generally champion graduate research. This process helps to ensure successful completion of the research degree within the prescribed period. All progression reviews will take place during the autumn term each academic year.
