Second year 2 geography students, Aaron McEvoy and Jack Relihan, who took part in the Virtual Environmental Challenge 2022 (VEC 2022) in April. This is an annual competition held between universities in France, Slovakia, Ireland and Burkina Faso that focuses on students ideas related to climate change and sustainability on campus. Aaron and Jack successfully made it to the final and were awarded second place in the competition. Their project used new air and temperature monitoring equipment from our geography lab to assess the Urban Heat Island effect on campus. Their suggestion to reduce this was to encourage UL to invest in green roofs. Their video trailer can is available. They are currently working on a virtual StoryMap of their VEC experience. They were commended by Dr Catherine Porter for their hard work and for how well they represented the University of Limerick.
