students studying in library
Thursday, 21 September 2023

Nine third-year BA students began their Erasmus le Gaeilge placements in Coláiste na Rinne in Gaeltacht na nDéise in Co. Waterford on Sunday September 17th. The students will be on an immersive placement there until Saturday the 30th September. Coláiste na Rinne, which is situated in a thriving Gaeltacht area, is involved in many educational initiatives at all levels, and has a large library which houses a significant collection of Irish manuscripts. The UL students’ placement includes a classroom-based course, library activities, local history walks and lectures, traditional singing and drama workshops, sporting activities and, of course, a few céilís! After the Gaeltacht course, the students will work on three projects, attend campus- based sessions, and participate in workshops as well as meeting online weekly. This semester provides an opportunity for students who want to work in the Irish-language sector to specialise in Gaeilge and develop their language skills in a meaningful way in a real-world setting. Dr Síle de Cléir, Erasmus Co-ordinator for Léann na Gaeilge, worked with Coláiste na Rinne to set up the course, will visit the students during their placement, and will supervise their project work during the rest of the semester.
