International students in a lecture hall taking part in the UL Global Orientation day
Thursday, 1 February 2024

UL Global welcomed 488 new international students to the campus for the Spring 2024 semester. The 7-day Orientation programme commenced on Sunday 21st January with Shannon airport collections. A variety of workshops were offered over the week to help students adjust to the UL academic system and their new learning environment. As part of the UL Global Orientation Week Spring 2024, Michelle Daly, University Teacher, School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics delivered two talks to the incoming students in the Jean Monnet Theatre .

Organised by Katherine Martin and Charlie Cunningham (Study Abroad, UL Global), Michelle’s first talk on Thursday, 25 January, highlighted the TESOL practicum offered by the TESOL/Linguistics Section at the School of MLAL. Gaining practical teaching experience as part of the TESOL module is an attractive opportunity for many Study Abroad students who come to UL. This TESOL practicum involves trauma-informed teacher training, classroom observations and teaching learners from a displaced background at UL Access Campus in Roxboro.

On Friday, 26 January Michelle presented a one-hour interactive intercultural workshop to Erasmus students. Yvonne Cross and Suzi Breslin (Student Engagement, UL Global). The aim of this workshop was to further develop students’ intercultural awareness and competence and explore the challenges of adapting to a new cultural, social and academic environment. A very special thanks to the UL Global team for organising such a successful Spring 2024 Orientation Week to all incoming international students to UL.
