This micro-credential represents a single module within a larger further award (eg. Certificate, Diploma, Masters). By taking this micro-credential you may be eligible to apply for a credit exemption should you progress to study for a further award. The programmes associated with this MicroCred are: 

Demographic changes have significant implications for the provision and delivery of health and social services to older people in all care settings. It is essential that healthcare professionals possess the specialist knowledge and skills necessary to respond to diverse and holistic needs of older people and changing care environments.

This module provides the student with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and expertise in person centred nursing care of the older person. This module explores theories and concepts of gerontology including theories of ageing, ageing process and ageism. It also explores concepts of re-enablement, rehabilitation, health/ill health continuum, gender and therapeutic relationships.  It explores theories and concepts underpinning gerontological nursing. Furthermore, this module examines comprehensive physical and psycho-social assessment processes and tools within gerontological care.

Learning outcomes:  

  • On completion of the programme the student will be able to:
  • Explain theories of ageing and the ageing process.
  • Examine theories and models of gerontological nursing.
  • Evaluate methods and tools of assessment used in nursing of the older person. 
  • Value the importance of a biopsychosocial and person-centred approach to care of the older person.
  • Discuss the challenges of ageism in the provision of patient care
  1. A registered nurse on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland

  2. Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet criteria identified in the English Language qualifications set by the University of Limerick.
