Building Leadership Capacity in Education through Effective Goalsetting and Feedback

      Effective capacity building strategies are vital for the success and growth of educational institutions. In light of this, the purpose of this module is to empower Post-Primary Principals and Deputy Principals by enhancing their leadership capacities through positive relationship building, effective communication, and courageous conversations. Senior Leaders in Post-Primary Schools will delve into the nature of capacity building in educational institutions and gain valuable insights into strategies that foster growth and drive positive change. They will develop essential skills such as setting high expectations while providing support, delivering actionable feedback, planning and engaging in courageous conversations, and fostering a culture of collaborative professionalism. By actively participating in practical exercises and collaborative learning experiences, Senior Leaders in Post-Primary Schools will acquire the necessary skills to excel in their leadership roles, fostering an environment that nurtures continuous improvement and success within educational institutions.

      On successful completion of this module, Senior Leaders in Post-Primary Schools will be able to:

      • Explain the nature of (models, purposes, benefits, evidence for) capacity building procedures in educational organisations.
      • Analyse case studies of capacity building in terms of human-centric and managerialist approaches.
      • Compare international policy and research-informed practices in planning, delivering and evaluating effective capacity building initiatives.
      • Differentiate between different styles of intra-and interpersonal communication required for effective capacity building, set within different scenarios.
      • Facilitate the formulation of professional development goals in the context of an ongoing professional learning culture for a variety of motivational and performance levels.
      • Describe the nature of (models, purposes, types) constructive feedback to support individual and collective professional communities of learning.
      • Manage conflict effectively using a range of techniques to support growth within a professional learning community.
      • Using the principles of coaching and mentoring, plan and describe the implementation of a sustainable professional development system that encourages a culture of celebration and championing appropriate to a specific school context.
      • Promote a culture of ethical and sustainable practices in support of employee and student wellbeing when implementing capacity building initiatives.
      • Recognises the need to lead capacity building initiatives differentially, based on the needs of the individual.
      • Reflect on the value of different feedback approaches during different capacity building initiatives.
      • Use principles of care and power to reflect on areas of conflict and growth in the context of professional learning communities.
