I had previously studied Finance in UCC and from this I decided I wanted to deepen my knowledge of economics which lead me to the MSc in Economics and Policy Analysis at UL. I have completed two semesters on the programme and I'm currently writing my thesis.

Why did you choose to master your ambitions in the MSc in Economics and Policy Analysis?

After my undergraduate studies I had a keen interest in expanding my knowledge of economics. After some research, I chose the MSc in Policy Analysis at UL as it equips students with a detailed understanding of economic fundamentals through the microeconomic and macroeconomic modules. Along with this it allows students the opportunity to study a wide range of modules across many areas of economics, such as labour, education, public finance, econometrics and industrial policy.

The masters offers small group teaching from leading economists in a supportive environment and the chance to work with lecturers who are experts in their fields. Compared to other programmes, the MSc Economics and Policy Analysis offers students a holistic understanding of how economic theory and policy interact in reality.

What did you choose the University of Limerick?

Aside from UL’s excellent reputation within the field of economics, there were other reasons why I chose to study at UL. There are many resources supplied by the college to help with study such as a specific post graduate room in the library which is very convenient. Additionally, UL is in an excellent location with a wide range of clubs and facilities which can be enjoyed by students.

What has been the highlight of the programme so far?

Overall, the programme has been fantastic and there are many highlights. Monthly research seminars provide students with an opportunity to network and interact with people who are at the forefront of policy development in Ireland.

The masters provides opportunities for students to study under lecturers who brought enthusiasm and world class expertise. Along with this my masters cohort were very supportive of each other and it was really interesting to engaged with everyone’s unique perspectives. The masters also has its own base classroom which is a very useful work space for individual study.

What benefit do you feel the programme will have on your career?

This programme is already benefitting me as I was able to secure a summer internship with a highly regarded government agency. Students are very much encouraged to pursue any job opportunities and the lecturers are really willing to provide advice on career opportunities. The masters has provided me with the ability to apply economics to a wide range of academic, business and policy settings which will stand to me throughout my career.

Advice for future students on the MSc in Economics and Policy Analysis?

Overall, I would absolutely recommend the MSc in Economics and Policy Analysis at UL. I would advise any future students to really engage with the modules and any events that are taking place within the Economics Department. I would also encourage students to ask lots of questions, the lecturers are very supportive and always willing to help.
