In this PhD presentation, Mathuriga Thevapalan, a second-year PhD student, explores the connection between pre-existing materials and improvisation within the realm of Karnatak music. This exploration unfolds through three distinct compositions preceded by non-metric improvisation, presented by herself, Professor Karaikudi S. Subramanian, and fellow PhD student Thenuga Thevapalan on the South Indian stringed instrument Vina.

About Karaikudi S. Subramanian:
Professor Karaikudi S. Subramanian is a senior most South Indian classical musician and educator, representing the 9th generation of the Karaikudi Vina tradition. He assumes a unique
position as a performer and educator. His research unfolds at the interface of authentic traditional practices and modern institutional approaches. In 1989, KSS founded the music institute ‘Brhaddhvani – Research & Training Centre for Musics of the World’ in Chennai.

His research initiatives have paved the way for meaningful collaborations with prominent artists and scholars across various music genres and arts disciplines. The culmination of his research efforts is the development of the learning methodology COMET (Correlated Objective Music Education and Training).
