Scholarships and bursaries

AHSS Faculty - Professor Tom Lodge Bursary AY26/27 

10 x €5000 bursaries 
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be considered:

1. Programme of Study
   • Must be applying to a Taught Master's programme within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) at the University of Limerick.
   • Programmes offered by the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance are excluded.  Please see  Scholarships and bursaries | University of Limerick for Irish World Academy of Music and Dance funding opportunities.
2. Residency Status
   • Must be an Irish or EU applicant.
3. Academic Qualifications
   • Applicants must hold, or be expected to hold, a minimum of a 2:1 (Second Class Honours, Grade 1) or First Class Honours in a Level 8 undergraduate degree.
   • If the final award has not yet been confirmed at the time of application, applicants should provide evidence of their expected classification (e.g. transcripts, academic references, or a letter from their institution).
   • Final confirmation of the award will be required before the waiver is granted.
4. Access Route
   • Must provide evidence of having entered higher education through a recognised access route, such as the Higher Education Access Route (HEAR), within the last six years.
5. Application and Enrolment
   • Applicants may apply for the waiver at the time of applying for their programme of study.
   • However, the waiver will only be awarded to those who are accepted and fully enrolled in their programme.
6. Attendance Requirement
   • Awardees must be based full-time at the University of Limerick.
   • Remote or online-only students are not eligible.

Roche Continents – Youth! Arts! Science!

Roche Continents – Since 2007, Roche brings together young, talented students from European universities to experience a unique journey exploring sources of inspiration at the intersection of science and art, and challenge the boundaries of their thinking.

Chosen by a nomination and selection process, 60 students from a wide range of scientific fields of study and various arts disciplines are given ample opportunity to engage with renowned scientists and artists, to be exposed to provocative scientific research, study contemporary artworks and visit exhibitions, and to participate in workshops and interact with other students.

Fee waiver

A limited number of full and/or partial fee waivers for research students at MA and PhD level. Distributed on an annual basis, the decision will be made by the Academy Director.

RTÉ Lyric FM Scholarships

The RTE Lyric FM Scholarships were established in 1999 in support of the MA Classical String Performance at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick. The aim of the scholarship is to support young talented string players who wish to study at UL. Since the scholarship was established in 1999, it has been awarded to students from Ireland, Australia, Malaysia, China, Hungary, Romania, Spain, Italy and the US. Recipients may be required to engage in work at the Academy, aimed towards professional development while making a valuable contribution to Academy life.

Universal Music UK Sound Foundation Bursary

Universal Music UK Sound Foundation is an independent music education charity, established in 1997 to celebrate the centenary of EMI Records and now generously supported by Universal Music. The foundation’s aim is to improve access to music education in the UK and in Ireland. A bursary was made available to students of Community Music, Irish Music Performance and Music Education at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. Patrons: Nick Mason CBE, Sir Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Cliff Richard, Diana Ross and Tina Turner.

Stepping Stones Scholarship

3x €1,000 general scholarships for IWA students on taught MA programmes. Students must have a demonstrable record in a performance and/or academic specialisation relevant to a programme of study at the Academy.

Stepping Stones Scholarships for Non EU student. These scholarships target international students on taught MA programmes at the Academy who have a demonstrable record in performance and/or academic specialisation relevant to a programme of student at the Academy.

Sionna PhD Scholarships

The Sionna PhD Scholarships are offered by the Irish World Academy to incoming (accepted) and first year PhD candidates. 

PCC Scholarship

As part of its commitment and support of the cultural experience at University of Limerick, particularly in the performing arts, Campus Life Services is offering a PCC scholarship to the value of €5000 towards accommodation to an undergraduate student of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick. This scholarship is only available for applicants of the BA Irish Music, BA Irish Dance, BA World Music, BA Voice, and BA Contemporary Dance. Campus Life Services aims to support students in residence to enjoy the best student living experience and get the best out of campus life. Campus Life Services, formerly Plassey Campus Centre (PCC), has also generously made an allocation of two residential scholarship places to support a number of postgraduate research students over the last number of years.

Participatory Health Research

The Refugee and Migrant Health Partnership (RMHP) is offering six bursaries for migrants to undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Participatory Health Research at University of Limerick's School of Medicine.

Who Can Apply?

• A person who has been through the International Protection process;
• A Beneficiary of Temporary Protection;
• A work visa holder; or
• A member of the Roma community.

What the Bursary Covers

• Full programme fees (€4,000) for the academic year 26/27 which is delivered part-time, and online with one in-person training block on-campus each semester. 

How to Apply

Submit a Letter of Interest (maximum 3 A4 pages) outlining:

• Your eligibility for the bursary; 
• Confirmation that you meet the programme eligibility requirements;
• Your interest in Participatory Health Research and the project or idea you would like to develop.

Letters of Interest should be submitted to phr.diploma@ul.ie by 12pm on 29 July 2026.

All Letters of Interest will be reviewed by the Course Director, Prof. Jon Salsberg, RMHP UL lead, Prof. Anne MacFarlane, and two migrant representatives from the Refugee and Migrant Health Partnership.

Successful bursary applicants will also be required to apply directly to the programme.

Nursing and Midwifery

Edith and Leslie Downer Entrance Scholarship - €1,000 pa.

Psychology

Details relating to scholarships and bursaries that may be available will be advertised on the Department of Psychology's website.

The Global MINDS programme is co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters programme.  There are two types of scholarships available in each intake:

• 10 full scholarships that cover the participation costs and a stipend of 1400 EUR per month throughout the duration of the programme
• 15 partial scholarships that cover the participation costs

In order to be considered for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship, applicants should include a request for funding and relevant justification in their supporting statement.

MSc - Public Health

Dr Sheila Boland Scholarship in Public Health

Established in memory of Dr Sheila Boland, this scholarship offers funding to a new awardee each year for a UL student who is enrolled in the MSc in Public Health programme. The purpose of the Scholarship is to provide funding assistance for a student to undertake their 8-week practical placement at the University of Arizona. The Scholarship will be awarded to the top performing student amongst the cohort who indicate their interest in placement at the University of Arizona. Performance will be measured against end of first semester module results. A once-off award of €5,000 will be awarded to the successful student.

EY Sponsorship of 3 students on the MSc in Accounting

The top candidate selected will be offered a fully sponsored place on the MSc in Accounting in UL (Award is in the amount of €10,000 per student), and an opportunity to interview for the EY Graduate Programme with EY. 

• In 2026/27 academic year, 1 student will receive the award.

Key details of Essay Competition for 2026/7

Essay title: Artificial Intelligence in Accounting: Evaluating its transformative potential and associated risks for the profession.

Due date: Essay is to be submitted online via Brightspace no later than 31 January 2026. 
Essay length: The essay should be no more than 1,500 words in length (excluding references).

Both are viewable at on UL's Policy Hub. For more details on what constitutes plagiarism, see Appendix 1 of the ‘Research Integrity Policy’. Referencing should follow the UL Harvard Referencing System guidelines.

Eligibility: To be eligible to enter, you must; 

• submit your essay, along with a cover sheet, before the deadline
• submit a CV with your essay submission
• a complete application for the MSc in Accounting (submit a complete application to the MSc in Accounting at Accounting - MSc | University of Limerick before 5pm on 31 January 2026.
• The successful candidate must receive a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree to be awarded the sponsorship.

A successful student will be informed before 30 June 2026

Sports Scholarships

The UL Sports Scholarships are designed to support top athletes in pursuing and excelling in their sport while also undertaking academic study at the University of Limerick.  

The scholarships are open to all current, full-time, UL students or those who are applying to come to UL for the first time, either through CAO or transferring at an undergraduate or postgraduate level.  Applicants must be a member of a national governing body of sport recognised by the Irish Sports Council, in the sport in which they are applying for a scholarship.
