During which he built real experience of innovating, developing, teaching, managing, and leading medical and health education programmes related to all levels of the health profession (undergraduate and postgraduate studies and continuous professional development). In addition, he has developed and managed medical education departments/centres that oversee and lead education in different countries such as Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

His work experience includes working in a medical education centre that serves different health professions institutes, innovating a medical education unit into a department, and establishing a medical education unit to serve a College of Medicine and development of a Medical Education Centre equipped to serve ten health professions programmes in four health related colleges.

As a leader in Medical Education, he participated in the development of and coordinated the running of the different postgraduate (Diplomas, Masters and PhD) programmes of Health Professions Education in different countries.

He also participated in the management of the education process by leading the development and implementation of educational strategic plans. His expertise in medical education, especially in social accountability, accreditation, curriculum development, and faculty development, has always extended beyond the walls of the institutes he has worked in. Accordingly, he has participated in different medical education activities, both long and short term, with national and international medical schools.

Mohamed Elhassan was heavily engaged by the concept of social accountability of medical schools very early in his career. His PhD thesis was one of the first theses on the topic internationally with his supervisor Dr. Charles Boelen, who introduced the concept of social accountability to the field of medical education.

His PhD work gave him the opportunity to promote the concept internationally. He was among the 135 international participants in the development of the Global Concensus on Social Accountability of Medical Schools in 2010, from that time he worked with international bodies to translate the concept into action. On the ground, mastering the concept has led him to develop medical education programmes' significant consideration of the context and issues of globalisation and social accountability. Such efforts familiarised him with leadership in medical education, as well as how accreditation systems work. His research and publications reflect his expertise in this area.

In addition, cultural diversity is a guiding factor in the work he conducts. He has cultivated an appreciation for cultural diversity over the years while liaising with health profession institutions internationally, such as in his positions in the Network TUFH, at the Academy of Medical Educators, and at the Association of Medical Education in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (AMEEMR). Each of these positions involves exposure to different people, systems in education and health, which allowed him to understand and embrace a diversity of practices and beliefs.
