Dr. Micheal Scanlon
Biography
Professor Scanlon is an electrochemist and a leader in the field of electrochemistry at polarised immiscible liquid|liquid or 'soft' interfaces. In 2016, he was awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant, allowing him to develop a world-class laboratory to study polarised liquid|liquid interfaces for energy conversion and storage applications. Using polarised liquid|liquid interfaces, Professor Scanlon has pioneered new approaches to:- electrocatalysis of energy related reactions, such as oxygen reduction, hydrogen evolution, and water oxidation,
- electrosynthesis of conducting polymer thin films and their nanocomposites,
- bioelectrochemistry of a model enzyme (Cytochrome c),
- interfacial self-assembly of porphyrin molecules and metallic nanoparticles, and
- electroanalytical chemistry of non-redox active molecules.
Research Interests
My primary mission is to understand the fundamental behaviour of polarised liquid|liquid interfaces and harness their untapped potential for applications related to energy conversion and storage, advanced functional materials development, sensor technology and the creation of bio-mimetic molecular machines.For more in-depth information, please visit my research group's website: scanlonelectrochemlab.com
