Biography

Michael Ryan is a lecturer below the bar in Industrial Biochemistry within the Department of Chemical Sciences. He completed his undergraduate degree in Industrial Biochemistry (UL) in 2004 and his Doctor Studies in 2009 under the supervision of Professor Catherine Adley and Professor Tony Pembroke. Following his PhD, Michael gained valuable experience as a post-doctoral researcher working on projects funded through the EPA and the EU-FP7.
Dr. Ryan is an international expert on Ralstonia pickettii species, particularly in purified water systems. Other interests include environmental microbiology and public health, antibiotic resistance and bio pharmaceuticals. He has authored over a dozen scientific papers over his career to date, has established valuable collaborations in both industry and academia and is a reviewer for a number of international peer reviewed journals.

Research Interests

My research interests are primarily focused in the area of microbiology, including environmental health, industrial microbial contamination and antimicrobial resistance.
Specific research strands includes but are not limited to: - Microbial growth in purified water systems including biofilm formation and filter penetration.- Environmental microbiology and public health; epidemiology of infectious diseases.- Antimicrobial resistance in the environment; elucidation of causative factors.- Mobile genetic elements; international expertise on Tn4731.
