Alex joined the Physical Education and Sport Sciences faculty in the role of a University Teacher in January of 2023 after moving from Canada. Alex completed his BSc (Human Kinetics), MSc (Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism), and PhD (Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism) at the University of Guelph in Canada under the supervision of Professor Lawrence Spriet. His research throughout his graduate studies involved several sport science fields, including sport nutrition and hydration, athlete injury and illness surveillance, and wearable technology. Alex also completed 16 months of a Postdoctoral Fellowship with Dr Jamie Burr in the Human Performance and Health Research Laboratory at the University of Guelph, where he studied the performance enhancing effects of blood flow restriction exercise on aerobic capacity and other cardiovascular measures. Before arriving at the University of Limerick, Alex had experience teaching sport nutrition, exercise physiology, biomechanics, and research project courses. He is now teaching within several PESS modules, including BR4081 (Broadening: Active Body, Active Mind), SS4142 (Scientific Perspectives of Sport and Exercise Psychology), SS204 (Cardiopulmonary Response to Exercise), SS4332 (Introduction to Biomechanics for Sport and Exercise), and SS4552 (Sport and Exercise Sciences: Immersion). Alex is hoping to continue his research in the areas of sport nutrition, using wearable technology to predict performance in team sport, and cardiovascular and exercise physiology adaptations resulting from blood flow restriction exercise.
