

The Faculty of Education and Health Sciences (EHS) would like to thank the speakers, attendees and guests at our Knowledge with Impact public lecture series 2024/25. The series showcases excellent research, research impact and the world-class researchers that work within the faculty.
The series began on 5 December 2024 with presentations by Prof Karen McCreesh, School of Allied Health, and Lauren Guilfoyle, PhD Researcher at PESS.
Prof McCreesh was joined by PPi partner, Martina Phelan, from Chronic Pain Ireland for their lecture titled Navigating pain: Co-creating better musculoskeletal care.
Lauren’s lecture, Youth Rugby in Ireland - a look at injury epidemiology and prevention, looked at findings of an innovative research project dedicated to monitoring injury trends across grassroots rugby clubs and schools in Ireland.


On 16 January, there were three presentations under the theme of ‘Social Inclusion’
- Drs Aoife Gallagher and Áine Kearns, School of Allied Health and Dr Alan Cusack (School of Law): The FAIRE (Fair Access to Justice – Ireland) Project: Providing equal access to justice for all in an effective and inclusive justice system (SDG 16)
- Anne Cronin, PhD Researcher, School of Medicine: Exploring the Role of Interpreters in Cross-Cultural Consultations: A Study of Ukrainian Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection accessing general practice in Ireland
- Professor Anne MacFarlane, School of Medicine, Professor Helen Phelan, Irish World Academy and Ahmed Hassan, Doras Limerick: Time to Sing! Re-imagining research methods to understand the health needs of migrants


In April, the series continued with an online session from two members of the School of Education, Éabha Hughes, PhD Researcher, and Dr Joanne O’Flaherty.

- Dr. Joanne O’Flaherty, School of Education: Ubuntu Voices: Exploring possible futures for Global Citizenship Education (GCE)
In May, two lectures were held on separate occasions, Dr Niamh Cummins, School of Medicine, presented her research as part of the IPERN-PHECC Research Roundtables on Tuesday, 6 May. Dr Cummins’ lecture was titled Building Research Capacity in Paramedicine: A sustainable patient-centred solution to wicked problems in our health system?

Dr Dympna Tuohy’s lecture, Learning from each other: Developing and incorporating Intergenerational Cafés within BSc Nursing Programmes, was delivered on 15 May and discussed the importance of shared learning opportunities for older people and student nurses.
The final session of the 2024/25 AY’s Knowledge with Impact series was held on Tuesday, 17 June with presentations by Dr Antonio Calderon, PESS, and Dr Sadhbh O’Dwyer, School of Allied Health.

- Dr Sadhbh O'Dwyer, School of Allied Health: “Why are you always boring on about justice?” The case for learning about social justice for neurodiversity specialist practitioners

The Knowledge with Impact series 2024-2025, arranged by Dr Elaine Kinsella, Assistant Dean Research at EHS, aimed to demonstrate the excellence and impact of world-class research led by academics and researchers based at the Faculty of Education and Health Sciences at UL in line with UL@50 Strategic Plan 2019-2024. The series was funded by Faculty of Education and Health Sciences, and organised by Lynn O’Doherty and Sinéad Liston from the Faculty Office.
