About the Event

At our event to launch the International 16 Days campaign, we will share new Women’s Aid research on bystander intervention in intimate relationship abuse amongst young people (aged 18-25) in Ireland.  This seminar will also examine young people’s attitudes to and understanding of intervening in intimate relationship abuse amongst their peers, and launch a new Too Into You public awareness campaign.

Speakers include:
  • Sarah Benson, Chief Executive, Women’s Aid
    Sarah Benson is the Chief Executive Officer of Women’s Aid, Ireland: a national domestic violence support and advocacy organisation. Women’s Aid supports thousands of women every year by offering a free, holistic services through its 24hr National Freephone Helpline, outreach and training services. The organisation is also a lobbying and campaigning organization which aims to raise awareness and change public attitudes & policies in relation to Domestic abuse.  Sarah will explore the key findings and Women’s Aid recommendations from our new research which examines young people’s attitudes to bystander intervention in Ireland.
  • Jackson Katz, Co-Founder, Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP)
    Jackson Katz, Ph.D., is an educator, author, and social theorist who is internationally renowned for his pioneering scholarship and activism on issues of gender, race and violence. He has long been a major figure and thought leader in the growing global movement of men working to promote gender equality and prevent gender violence. He is co-founder of Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), one of the longest-running and most widely influential gender violence prevention programs in North America, and the first major program of its kind in the sports culture and the military. MVP introduced the “bystander” approach to the sexual assault and relationship abuse fields; Katz is a key architect of this now broadly popular strategy. 
  • Ngozi Fulani, CEO, Sistah Space
    Sistah Space is a specialist organisation in the UK that supports African and Caribbean heritage women and girls who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse and sexual abuse. The survivors are from many different sections of the African & Caribbean community, including the Rastafarian/ Grassroots community, who remain on the fringes of society. Rastafarian and other grassroots women are among those who have the highest rate of underreporting.
  • Juliana Shiel, Survivor of intimate relationship abuse and Too Into You advocate Juliana Shiel is a survivor of intimate relationship abuse and advocate for Women’s Aid Too Into You project. Juliana is an artist and model and bravely shared her story of abuse as part of the Too Into You campaign in February 2021 which received widespread praise on social media.
  • Suzanne Jacob OBE, Chief Executive of Safe Lives UK
    Suzanne will explore the Safe Lives UK report Safe Young Lives on Young People and Domestic Abuse and their work with young people.
