Principles Underpinning Dementia Care - Module NS6071

Dementia is a general term that describes a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities, which interfere with daily life. Dementia is not a normal part of ageing, and its diagnosis involves a comprehensive assessment. The condition has significant physical, psychological, and social impacts on individuals and their families.    

This 12-week, Level 9 micro-credential is designed for registered nurses who want to deepen their understanding of dementia and improve how people living with dementia at every stage of the condition.  

At the end of this module, students will be able to: 

Critically evaluate the philosophy underpinning person-centred dementia care. Critically acknowledge the concept of personhood in the context of dementia care. Critically analyse policies and strategies that impact dementia care. Discuss the pathophysiology and the illness trajectory of dementia. Undertake comprehensive, holistic assessments. Critically understand the importance of family/carer relationships for the person with dementia.
