Gain the skills and knowledge to solve healthcare challenges through the design and innovation of medical technologies, products, service systems and human experiences.
UL’s Master of Science (MSc) in Design for Health and Wellbeing gives you the opportunity to apply design methods to develop healthcare solutions while working directly with clinicians and industry partners.
This unique interdisciplinary programme has been co-designed with stakeholders across healthcare, from hospitals to mental health services, public health and the wellbeing of consumers in society. It draws on complementary expertise from the School of Design, the School of Medicine, the Kemmy Business School and the healthcare expertise of The University Hospital Limerick group.
There is an exit route for students after completion of the taught modules. Students who exit after the autumn and spring semesters will earn a Graduate Diploma. Students who continue onto the summer semesters will be awarded an MSc.
During this programme, you will
- Gain an understanding of product and service design innovation, design thinking and processes and strategic design methods.
- Explore real-world challenges linked with industry (health services, medical devices, life sciences) and healthcare providers and work on external partner specified design briefs around specific development requests.
- Develop expertise in ethics and good clinical practice for medical device design and regulations.
- Carry out design research in clinical settings to identify unmet healthcare needs and develop innovative, well-defined solutions.
- Work across healthcare disciplines with external partners and with leading companies in MedTech to develop cutting edge solutions.
- Learn about entrepreneurship and the analytical and conceptual skills required to establish a new innovative venture in healthcare.
- Explore the concepts of health and wellbeing, illness, disease and disability, and health inequalities and protection.
- Learn about anatomy and physiology in emergent care, the causes, risk factors and symptoms associated with different types of disease profiles and the different types of treatments.
