On Wednesday, 20 March 2024, UL Student Sustainability collaborated with the UL History Society to host a unique basket weaving workshop. Led by Akshata Bheemasamudra Mallikarjunappa, Workshop Coordinator with UL Student Sustainability, the session provided students with an opportunity to explore traditional crafting techniques while promoting sustainability.

Basket weaving holds a rich cultural heritage and embodies principles of sustainability. By utilising natural materials such as reeds and grasses, basket weaving minimises environmental impact and fosters a connection to nature. Through hands-on experience, participants learned the art of weaving, gaining an appreciation for traditional crafts and their role in sustainable living.

Beyond its cultural significance, basket weaving also aligns with modern sustainability practices. By repurposing materials and adopting eco-friendly techniques, participants discovered how traditional crafts can contribute to reducing waste and promoting resourcefulness.

The collaboration between UL Student Sustainability and the UL History Society underscores the interdisciplinary nature of sustainability efforts. By integrating historical knowledge with practical skills, the workshop encouraged students to explore sustainable living from diverse perspectives, fostering a holistic understanding of environmental stewardship.

As participants crafted their own baskets, they not only honed their creative skills but also embraced the principles of sustainability in action. Through initiatives like the basket weaving workshop, UL Student Sustainability continues to engage students in hands-on learning experiences that promote environmental consciousness and empower individuals to lead sustainable lifestyles.

Student Sustainability has a wide array of events taking place every week, from panel discussions and debates, to workshops and guest speakers.
