MicroCreds are bite-sized, accredited, enterprise-powered qualifications that allow learners to gather skills and competencies in a flexible, fast and affordable way. Micro-credentials are designed so that enterprises can recognise and integrate critical skills into their workforce, while also facilitating individuals’ career growth in a highly customisable way.
Short in duration
Delivered in short, targeted bursts of 5-12 weeks, learners can formally upskill quickly without significant time and financial commitment.
In demand skills focus
Short courses designed for upskilling, reskilling and accelerating career growth as well as helping enterprise build practical work-relevant competencies.
Assessment based
Transparent learning outcomes are formally assessed in line with UL regulations and aligned with the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).
Accredited
Each MicroCred carries an accreditation of between 1 and 30 ECTS credits. A micro-credential is awarded following assessment of achievement of learning outcomes.
Engagement with enterprise
Content co-designed and (on occasions co-delivered) with enterprise to provide outstanding and distinctive educational experiences that incorporate practical, hands-on skills and competencies to ensure learners can embrace challenges of today’s working environment.
Stackable
As MicroCreds are accredited learning, they may stack into larger awards and programmes.

MicroCreds is a National Project
Project Outline:
MicroCreds is the national project, led by the Irish Universities Association and delivered in partnership with each of the seven founding IUA universities. Its vision is to empower lifelong learning in Ireland by re-imagining learner’s relationship with education through agile, accessible and bite-sized qualifications: micro-credentials.
This national project, funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science’s (DFHERIS) and National Training Fund via the Human Capital Initiative will establish a National Framework that standardises the awarding of MicroCreds across Ireland so that learners’ qualifications are nationally recognised, the first in Europe.
Here at UL we are actively contributing to this goal while developing a dynamic suite of flexibly delivered MicroCreds aligned with the National Framework of Qualifications so that learners and enterprises can develop talent in a tailored way that benefits the individual learner and employer.
Core Values of MicroCreds:
- They range from Level 6-9 on National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).
- Credit range of 1-30 ECTS.
- Standalone qualifications which are transferable and may be stacked into larger qualifications.
