Choosing the University of Limerick was one of the most important decisions I have made in my life. I am originally from Catalonia, and I came to UL as an Erasmus student during my BA in English Studies. I spent the year immersed in Irish culture, academic life, and the vibrant international community on campus. But what was meant to be a temporary experience quickly became a life-changing one.
My time at UL strengthened my language skills and love for literature, but most importantly, it opened my eyes to a deeper interest in international affairs, Irish public policy, and European cooperation. The welcoming environment, high-quality teaching, and the friendships I built in Limerick made such an impact that, after completing my undergraduate degree, I decided to return to UL to pursue a Master's degree in Politics.
The MA in Politics provided me with a strong understanding of European and international governance, policy development, and public administration. The programme encouraged critical thinking and gave me the confidence to engage with complex political and policy issues.
Today, I work as a Policy Officer in Ireland's Department of Defence. My role focuses on European policy and international engagement, which allows me to contribute to issues that are both nationally and internationally significant. I have had the opportunity to support Ireland's work during the Irish Presidency and to represent my department at meetings in Brussels, including discussions held in the Council of the European Union.
Looking back, I can see a direct connection between my experiences at UL and where I am today. The international outlook of the university, the encouragement from lecturers, and the opportunities to engage with people from different backgrounds helped shape my career path. As someone who first arrived in Limerick as a lost Erasmus student, I never imagined that I would later return for postgraduate study and go on to build a career in public service in Ireland.
For any international student considering UL, my advice is simple: embrace every opportunity. The connections you make, the experiences you gain, and the education you receive can open doors you never expected. For me, UL was the foundation for a career that has taken me from Catalonia to the heart of European policymaking.
