Go further in your career and support others in their development by qualifying as a Guidance Counsellor.

This MA supports practicing teachers and professionals in developing the expertise and qualification needed to become guidance counsellors.

The two-year, part-time master’s equips you with a wide range of knowledge and skills to support an individual’s personal, social, educational and career development.

Accredited by the Department of Education and Youth Work, the MA Guidance Counselling will support you to establish career options in post-primary, further education or community settings.

Guidance counsellors in secondary schools are required by the Department of Education to hold a recognised post-primary teaching qualification as well as a qualification in guidance counselling.

During this programme, you will:

  • Develop specialised skills in the essential elements of professional guidance counselling to support individuals in social and personal development, educational progression, lifelong learning and career development.
  • Gain practical experience in guidance counselling through a professional placement or a ‘practicum’ in year two.
  • The Master’s places a strong emphasis on your personal development, fostering self-awareness and insight to enhance your understanding of the guidance counselling process with individuals at all life stages.
  • Qualify as a professional who is collaborative, reflective and ethically aware of professional standards in guidance counselling.
