UL’s Master of Arts (MA) in Composition and Creative Music Practice is a unique one-year full-time or two-year part-time programme for composers, sound artists, improvisers and performers from all music traditions.  

It supports the development of individual artistic practice through composition, performance, improvisation and sound art. 

The programme encourages collaborative exploration across genres, art forms and cultures. Students work with and without notation, and are supported in creating acoustic and/or electronic music through inclusive and experimental approaches. 

It is suited to applicants from diverse musical backgrounds including traditional, folk, classical, popular, world and experimental music, as well as sound art practices. 

During this programme, you will

  • Develop the complementary creative music practices of composition, performance, improvisation, and sound art.
  • Explore a range of historical and contemporary composition and creative music practices, styles and repertoires.
  • Create acoustic and/or electronic music through an inclusive range of composition, improvisation and performance practices.
  • Explore cross-genre, cross-arts and cross-cultural creativity.
  • Complete a final project that reflects your individual artistic voice.
