UL's Master of Arts (MA) in Applied Linguistics (International) equips you with the analytical and practical skills needed to address language challenges across society, education, media, policy, and technology.

You’ll gain global experience through an international semester and a 12-week internship or placement abroad or choose to complete a traditional dissertation.

You can also opt to spend your second semester on academic placement with a partner institution overseas.

The programme includes advanced academic writing and English proficiency modules to support international students and offers a wide range of electives tailored to pathways such as teaching, translation, sociolinguistics, and language in organisations.

During this programme, you will

  • Examine how language operates and its role in society, including in technology, media, education, and policymaking.
  • Learn how language can be used to solve real-world problems, as applied linguistics focuses on studying and understanding language in real-life situations.
  • Develop a perspective on language in different context and culture by developing expertise in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, and language research methodologies.
  • Gain international experience through an oversees semester, as well as a 12-week international summer internship.
