Staying well, both physically and mentally, is a critical part of successful student life. While it might be more challenging than usual now for some of you, now is the time to reach out for support. We have support available for all  international students – no matter where they are. On this page, you will find resources on optimising your remote learning experience as well as information on the broad range of students support services here at UL.

Student Support Services

The Accommodation Office is located in the Student Courtyard (number 16 on the campus map) and is available 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday.

On-Campus Accommodation  

If you choose to live in one of UL's eight student villages, you will have your own private study bedroom equipped with a good size study desk and free access to high speed internet via the UL wired network. All accommodation offers a private bedroom with shared living space and kitchen. Some of our apartment style residences offer en-suite. All villages are equipped with a full set of inventory. From pots, pans, pillows and duvets to a TV in the living room, we will have thought of all the essentials so that you do not have to go to additional expense 

Off-Campus / Private Accommodation

Please note, the university does not accept liability for accommodation advertised on the off-campus database. Please beware of fraudulent persons purporting to be landlords/landladies on Facebook, Internet sites or other media. Do not pay money to persons for accommodation, unless you are absolutely sure that they are genuine – landlords/ladies should not request full payment of rent before you have arrived in Ireland. Always request a contract be signed. 

The UL Chaplaincy works to meet the many and varied religious needs of a global university campus. The key activities of the UL Chaplaincy team fall into 3 categories: 

• Support 

• Worship/Spirituality 

• Outreach/Volunteering 

The Chaplaincy Centre (Teach Fáilte), located in the Student Centre, is open daily from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Individuals or groups are welcome for a casual cuppa and chat.  In times of difficulty students are assured of a listening ear and may be facilitated to avail of other supports on or off campus. 

The Contemplative Centre (located in the Student Centre, number 16 on the campus map) is an oasis of peace and tranquillity for those who wish to take time from the campus hub-bub to reflect, pray or listen to sacred music.  Religious services are provided throughout the academic year. 

You are welcome to contact the UL Chaplaincy. The UL Chaplaincy service may put you in touch with other support services on campus. 

Student Counselling and Wellbeing Service is a free and confidential service which is available to all registered UL students. The service is staffed by qualified and experienced Clinical Psychologists, Student Counsellors, Intern/Trainee Psychotherapists, and Assistant Psychologists. Together they provided an extensive array of skill, expertise, and knowledge, equipping them to work with a wide range of personal issues.  

The Student Counselling and Wellbeing Service at UL is located in block C, level M, main building, opposite the student health centre. 

The counselling service provides a free and confidential service from 9-5, Monday to Friday. It is the first point of contact for your mental health care needs. You begin by attending a drop-in service which runs each weekday throughout the semester, after which further supports will be offered depending upon your needs and the resources available. Typical supports include: online supports; short-term counselling; or referral to a specialist mental health service.

Counselling can be provided online or face to face, depending upon your need as well as the physical resources available at the service. The service is non-diagnostic and non-medical in approach. It does not provide specialised assessments nor prescribe medications. Students accessing the services outside of Europe cannot be offered online counselling for indemnity purposes. Please be advised that in order to make an appointment with the UL Student Counselling and Wellbeing Service, students will need to provide an Irish mobile phone number. (Irish sim-cards available at UL Global Reception).

If you are at risk / suicidal please immediately contact either the crisis liaison mental health team at the University Hospital Limerick (061 301111)/ your local hospital, or your GP immediately.

The Disability Support Service (DSS) are committed to the provision of educational opportunities to Students with Disabilities (SwD) on full-time undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, as well as mature students and international students with disabilities. We offer a dedicated support service to students registered with our service.  

International and Erasmus students are required to register with Disability Support Services in order for us to put academic and exam supports in place. Documentation regarding your disability should be submitted, a Needs Assessment will take place with Disability Service and reasonable academic accommodations will be agreed upon. 

The First Seven Weeks is an initiative at the University of Limerick designed to provide strong, enhanced and targeted support to students during the very early weeks of their time as UL students. Recognising that successful early adjustment is linked to subsequent success, we provide a range of information, target our resources, and interact with our new students in ways that make them know we care about them and are interested in their successful adjustment.

 

The Information Technology Division is the central IT Services function at UL. We are responsible for supporting, maintaining and developing the information and communications technology of the University. If students have issues with their login credentials, problems accessing student account, problem with Sulis, problems with printing, problems with laptop loan in the library the right department to contact is ITD. 

During the academic year, the ITSS Service Desk is open from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday, and between 10am and 2pm on Saturdays. 

UL Postgraduate Students’ Union (PSU) is the chief representative body for postgraduate students at the University of Limerick. The PSU is a democratic organisation run by two full-time officers elected by the Postgraduate Student Body along with the staff. The PSU’s main functions are to provide academic assistance to postgraduate students, to provide support to students in need, to lobby the University and the government on issues affecting postgraduate students, and to promote social and cultural inclusion. 

The PSU is your liaison to other helpful services on campus and support students with: 

  • Academic & research issues: student-lecturer & student-supervisor issues, result, equality across faculties & student complaints 
  • Welfare: Financial Aid, Childcare Bursary, Immigration & visa support, job opportunities 
  • Student Experience: Social & cultural events, Clubs & Societies, accommodation

The ULPSU Common Room is located in the Stables Courtyard (number, where postgraduate students can relax between classes. There are microwaves and a kettle along with free tea/coffee and daily newspapers. 

The ULPSU operates Monday-Friday 9:00am - 6:00pm 

The Student Engagement and Success (SES) Unit are here to support your transition into 3rd level to ensure that you get all the support you need to make your first year a success. Coming into first year of university is a transition in everyone’s life. If you, or any of your friends, begin to experience doubts or are having difficulties settling in making or positive progress in your course, the SES Unit are here to help where they can. 

The Student Health Centre is an urgent care/advisory service and deals with all general health issues as they present. Services include access to: doctor (GP), nurse, contraceptive clinic, sexual health clinic and physiotherapy. 

The Student Health Centre is located in block C, level M, in the Main Building (number 13 on the campus map) and provides a service for University of Limerick registered students only. 

All appointments must be booked in advance and made by telephoning 061 202 534.  It is not possible to book via email or by calling in to the Student Health Centre Reception. 

All students registering with the Student Health Centre must have an Irish mobile number. International numbers can no longer be accepted

There is a Student Support Officer (SSO) aligned with each of the four faculties. The SSOs are here to assist full-time undergraduate students in finding the answers to questions and identifying the appropriate supports to help them excel during their time in the University of Limerick. 

The Student Support Officers support students with the following issues: Struggling academically, Personal/Health Issues, Financial concerns, Course Uncertainty, Exit Forms, Internal Transfers, Family Issues/Homesickness, Bereavement. This list is not exhaustive, and students should still contact an SSO even if their issue is not mentioned here. There is never an issue too big or too small.

UL Student Life is the Student Representative Body of UL, funded by students and made up of elected student representatives, and paid support staff.  Our role is to enhance the experience of every UL student by supporting the class reps, student officers, and the student council in their work.
