The Journal

History Studies is the only history journal in Ireland that is edited and managed by postgraduate students and provides a publishing platform for both undergraduate and postgraduate scholars. It is refereed by a panel of distinguished historians and is an established periodical in the field of historical scholarship.

Established in 1999, History Studies has appeared nearly annually since then. Volume 13 (2012) is the first volume to be distributed online in addition to the traditional print edition, since then the Journal has appeared in both print and digital form. This website provides free access to past volumes (see dedicated volume tab), where potential applicants can view the high standard of submissions received every year by History Studies.

In addition, the journal is launched every year in the University of Limerick.

Call for Papers - History Studies Volume 23 (2022)

History Studies now invites articles for inclusion in Volume 23 of the Journal from undergraduate and postgraduate students. The theme for this year's issue 'Responding to Crisis' is open to work on all regions, topics and time periods. As the world faces the threats from the climate emergency, coronavirus pandemic, and escalation of war, the Journal seeks submission of papers considering historically how individuals, organisations or societies  responded to crisis. Papers could investigate how people resisted, reformed, submitted to or survived times of significant crisis. They may review micro-historical examples, significant single issues/events or major societal themes.

These or similar issues related to the theme of 'Responding to Crisis' can be addressed within the theoretical frameworks of wide-ranging areas of historical research, including but not limited to, Black History, Class, Cultural History, Economic History, Education, Food, Gender, History of Emotions, History of the Family, History of Ideas, History of Science, Labour, LGBT+ History, Medical History, Migration/Immigration, Political History, Religion, Social History, Sport, Material Culture.

History Studies the Journal of the University of Limerick's history students, is the only student-produced history journal in Ireland. It is a refereed publication celebrating diverse student research. Founded in 1998, the Journal's readership has expanded to countries outside Ireland. and over twenty two years it has become an established periodical in the field of historical scholarship. Papers related to the theme should be no more than 5,000 words in length, including footnotes, and should be sent as an email attachment in Word the address below. This address should also be used for any queries. The format and referencing of all submissions must comply with the Irish Historical Studies (IHS) referencing system.
