UL Executive Dean conferred as fellow of Irish Academy of Engineering
The Executive Dean at UL’s Faculty of Science and Engineering has been conferred as a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering (IAE).
Professor Kenneth Stanton, Full Professor of Materials Engineering and Executive Dean at UL, was one of four new fellows welcomed at a conferring ceremony held recently at the Academy.
The aim of the IAE is to advance the wellbeing of the country by marshalling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to policy makers on matters involving engineering and technology.
The IAE is an all-island body concerned with issues where the members, based on their wide and diverse experience, can make a unique contribution to economic, social and technological development.
Awarded alongside Professor Stanton were Martin Hogan, Barbara Lane and Liam Prendiville.
Welcoming the new fellows at the ceremony, IAE President Sean Finlay said: “It is a pleasure to welcome the new fellows to our Academy, and we are in awe of their contribution to the engineering profession.”
Commenting on the Fellowship Professor Stanton said: “I am deeply honoured to have been elected a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering. I am grateful to the Academy for this recognition, which reflects not only my own work, but also the dedication and collaboration of colleagues and students I have had the privilege to work with over many years.”
As Executive Dean of UL’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, Professor Stanton oversees eight departments, the Bernal Institute, and research centres comprising over 6000 students and 600 staff.
Originally from Cork, he studied Materials Science at UL before completing postgraduate research in physics and a PhD in glass-ceramic biomaterials.
He built his academic and research career at UL, and later at UCD, where he progressed to Professor, established accredited master’s programmes in materials science and engineering, and served as Graduate School Director and Head of School.
His research spans biomedical and space engineering, with key contributions in titanium additive manufacturing for orthopaedic implants and coating technologies for space applications, earning national awards and a patent.
Professor Stanton is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), a Chartered Engineer in Ireland and the UK, and an IOM3 International Medal recipient.
