Live Teaching

Cameras and microphones are installed in General Teaching Spaces in UL to allow live teaching sessions to be recorded. Details of rooms that are Panopto enabled are published here as the equipment is installed.

Select the ‘Centrally Bookable Rooms Only’ dropdown option for a detailed room list.

The Panopto integration for MS Teams is available. This integration allows MS Teams meeting recordings to be automatically uploaded into Panopto and should make it easier for you to locate your MS Teams recordings in Panopto, edit them, add captions, and share your recordings with your students.

Full details of this new feature in Panopto are available in the user guide: MS Teams and Panopto for Teaching Staff

Panopto offers accessibility features that allows users to easily navigate and read the Panopto web interface. The web interface supports screen readers for all available creator and viewer interfaces. The web interface also supports keyboard access, allowing you to use the tab key to access all available functions. All sessions fully support adding and displaying captions.

Further information on Panopto’s accessibility features is available at this link: https://support.panopto.com/s/article/Learn-About-Accessibility-Features

When you create/upload a video or audio file to Panopto automatic speech recognition (ASR) captions in English are automatically generated and added to your recording, making your online content more accessible. The Panopto machine-generated captions provide approximately an 85-95% accuracy rate which may vary based on the audio sound quality of your recording and the topics being presented. The machine-generated captions can be edited via the Panopto editor.

Multiple language ASR Captioning.

It is now possible to change the default ASR captioning language for a folder in Panopto from English to a second language.  ASR captioning is now supported for the following languages: Spanish, German, French, Dutch, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Russian, Polish, Portuguese, Danish, Finnish, Hungarian, Norwegian, Swedish, and Italian.  (Please note Irish is not currently supported.)

Any new videos/audios uploaded or created in a folder where the default caption language has been changed will now have captions in the language chosen. Note, the captions will only change for new content and existing content will not be affected. As a workaround, if you need to change the language of captions for existing recordings you will need to download the recording and then re-upload them to this folder for the captions to change to the preferred language.

Full details on multiple language ASR captioning are available at this link: https://support.panopto.com/s/article/How-to-Use-Multiple-Language-ASR-Captioning

Podcasting offers the opportunity for lecturers to easily broadcast engaging audio and video content to their student. To access the podcast, students simply subscribe to the podcast feed.

Panopto’s built in podcast features simplify the podcast creation process and will with a simple “tick of a button” allow you to share your recording materials with your students in a convenient and accessible manner.

Notice regarding Podcasting - Anonymous access

RSS and Apple Podcasts feeds can be accessed by anyone with the feed URL, without needing to authenticate. This means that, if feeds are enabled for a folder, these secret URLs could potentially be shared outside of the institution, allowing anonymous viewers the ability to download the MP3 files.

Benefits of Podcasting for Education Purpose:

1. Ease of access and convenience.

One of the advantages of podcasts is the portability and convenience they offer. Podcasts can be downloaded to any mobile device, allowing the student to access the learning resources anytime, anywhere, with very little effort.

2. Increased engagement

Many students struggle to sit and watch a recorded lecture for more than 10 or 15-minutes. If the same material is presented in podcast format, they are far more likely to listen to the full episode. They can listen to the podcast in otherwise wasted time, or alongside a routine activity such as sitting on the bus, walking, washing the dishes or in the gym.

3. Review and exam preparation

Students can use the podcast for reference purposes or for preparing themselves for upcoming examinations. Podcasts give the student the ability to review and re-listen to difficult material and learn at their own pace.

We have created a range of resource materials including step-by-step videos and instructional guides.
