The University of Limerick fully respects an individual’s right to privacy and actively seeks to preserve the privacy rights of those who share information with the University. Analytics are a vital tool that provide insights and data on how users interact with a website.

Analytics provide understanding of customer behaviour that can be used to create a better user experience for website visitors as well as identifying problems in online services and indicating how effective marketing campaigns have been. Analytics are critical for assessing website performance and assuring strategic goals are being met.

However, there can be potential issues with some analytic tools and respecting the privacy of the user or complying with GDPR regulations.

To be as compliant as possible with GDPR and privacy regulations, UL uses the open source analytics platform “Matomo”.

Matomo can be configured to be compliant with GDPR and privacy regulations, and places an emphasis on data ownership and respecting privacy. At UL Matomo has been configured to be as GDRP compliant as possible. Data collected is not shared with any third party.

The configuration of Matomo for UL has been configured as follows to respect user privacy –

  • Deactivated ‘visits log and visitor profile’ reports
  • Verified that the default Matomo settings are still in place
  • Ensured that visitor IP addresses are anonymous
  • Ensured that third-party cookies and cross-domain tracking are not used
  • Ensured that the “User ID” measurement is not used
  • Ensure that the ECommerce tracking is not used
  • Ensure that Heatmaps and Session Recordings are disabled
  • Configured Matomo so that no personal data is collected

By default, all visitors to our website are anonymously and privately tracked as outlined above, but if you do wish to opt out of any tracking completely, you can do so below.
