SME Knowledge Management: An Exploratory Study of Data-Driven Capability Frameworks

This research focuses on developing a knowledge-based capability framework that supports SMEs in utilising their data. Knowledge management is used as the central theoretical construct with the literature review exploring the core subjectivist, objectivist and practice-based perspectives.  Building on these perspectives it investigates the knowledge management processes of creation, storage, transfer/sharing and application (Alavi & Leidner, 2001). In parallel, the literature also examines the cultural, technological, structural and managerial capabilities (Gold, Malhotra, & Segars, 2001) required to implement knowledge management processes, exploring the application of knowledge management as a strategic tool, and proposing a framework to support SMEs in decision-making and strategy development.
