We would like to congratulate Matthew Reeves on being this year’s recipient of the Lousie Newman Bursary. This prize recognises the top academic student amongst Bachelor of Business Studies students who major in Risk Management and Insurance in the University of Limerick each year. The Insurance Institute of Ireland award this bursary in memory of the untimely death of a past colleague of theirs, as well as a past student and past colleague of ours, Louise Newman.

Robert Ford, who is a lecturer in Risk and Insurance in the Kemmy Business school, and the inaugural recipient of this award back in 2010, commented at the presentation. “I have had the opportunity on various occasions to speak with Louise’s colleagues, friends and family and hear about what a wonderful, intelligent and caring person she was. I am honoured that we can continue to take the opportunity to pause each year and acknowledge her impact on both of our institutions through this presentation”.

Although based upon academic achievement, Matthew has proven himself to be a worthy advocate of this award to commemorate Louise. While a student here he also has received the President’s Volunteer Award on a number of occasions, represented the KBS and BBS as a Student Ambassador and also represented his fellow students as Class Representative, exemplifying characteristics of volunteerism and altruism, fitting for such an honour.

We are very proud of him here and are also extremely grateful to the Insurance Institute of Ireland for continuing this legacy, generously acknowledging the efforts of our top graduate, and remaining engaged with the students of the programme and our business school.
