Wednesday, 19 April 2023

On Tuesday, 18th April 2023, Student Sustainability had the privilege of hosting Colonel Colm Doyle, moderated by UL Student Sustainability Communications manager Ríona Gillespie, to delve into Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) - Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

Colonel Doyle's distinguished career spanning over four decades in the Defence Forces provided him with unparalleled insight into the complexities of conflict resolution and peacekeeping. With extensive experience in conflict resolution and peacekeeping, including tours in Cyprus, Lebanon, and the Middle East, he has contributed significantly to global efforts for stability and security. Colonel Doyle's leadership roles, such as Director of Public Relations and Chief of Staff of the Military Division at the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in New York, highlight his commitment to promoting peace and strengthening institutions. His memoir, "Witness to War Crimes: The memoirs of a peacekeeper in Bosnia," provides profound insights into his experiences, underscoring the importance of accountability and reconciliation in post-conflict societies. Through his continued advocacy and commentary, Colonel Doyle remains a beacon of hope for a world free from conflict and injustice.

Colonel Doyle's insights serve as a testament to the vital role of strong institutions and effective governance in promoting peace and justice globally. As we strive to achieve SDG 16 and build a more peaceful and inclusive world, his experiences offer invaluable lessons and inspiration for future generations. Through continued dialogue, collaboration, and commitment to the principles of peace and justice, we can create a more equitable and prosperous future for all.

The UL Student Sustainability Conversation Series invites exceptional individuals to speak to students in the University about their professional and personal experiences, centrally themed around a UN Sustainable Development Goal. We do this to showcase to students the fantastic real-life work that takes place around us in advancing economic, environmental, and/or social sustainability, while providing students with worldviews and perspectives that inspire and challenge perceptions around effective sustainable development.
