On Wednesday, 22 November, the UL Student Sustainability Conversation Series delved into Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, hosting Stephen Kinsella, Professor of Economics at the University of Limerick. The discussion, expertly moderated by Sathvika Kommera, a Study Abroad student at UL and an alum of the inaugural GLSD programme, explored strategies for promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth aims to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. It recognises the importance of creating opportunities for decent and productive work, ensuring equal access to employment, and fostering an environment conducive to entrepreneurship and innovation. By prioritising economic growth that is inclusive and sustainable, SDG 8 seeks to eradicate poverty, reduce inequality, and promote social inclusion.

Stephen Kinsella, with his extensive experience as Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of Economics at UL, provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with achieving SDG 8. His expertise in smart cities, regional collaborations, and economic networks contributed to a nuanced discussion on promoting economic resilience and decent work opportunities for all.

Moderator Sathvika Kommera's diverse background and perspective enriched the dialogue, highlighting the importance of inclusive economic growth and the role of education and innovation in driving sustainable development.

The UL Student Sustainability Conversation Series invites exceptional individuals to speak to students in the University about their professional and personal experiences, centrally themed around a UN Sustainable Development Goal. We do this to showcase to students the fantastic real-life work that takes place around us in advancing economic, environmental, and/or social sustainability, while providing students with worldviews and perspectives that inspire and challenge perceptions around effective sustainable development.
