ABSTRACT

The presentation will focus on the activities of the Battery Research Group at Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic, which includes research of electrode materials for batteries, recycling of batteries, analysis of commercial cells and the application of mathematical modelling and simulations in battery research. The fundamental research discussed will concern materials synthesis and electrochemical characterisation for Li-ion batteries and post-Li ion batteries, especially cathode materials for Li-S batteries and electrode materials for Na-ion batteries. Other areas that will be covered in the presentation will be the research on direct recycling of Li-ion batteries, and in-depth analysis of commercial cells for automotive, stationary energy storage systems or other applications. Last but not least, the presentation will focus on the use of mathematical modelling and simulations in battery research, both in terms of materials used in batteries and the batteries themselves and their parameters.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Associate Professor Tomas Kazda with >90 publications (H-index 11) and 6 patents was, at the age of 34, one of the youngest scientists of the faculty appointed as associate professor. He leads the Battery Research Group of 4 postdocs and 8 PhD students at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Technology, Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic. The aim of his group is the synthesis of electrode materials for positive electrodes of Li-ion batteries, and post-lithium systems namely Na-ion and Li-S batteries. The battery group also focuses on commercial battery testing, mathematical and physical modelling, and direct recycling of Li-ion batteries. Since 2017 he is a member of the Committee for Sustainable Energy and the Committee for Sustainable Transport of the Government Council of the Czech Republic. He is the Chairman of the international conference Advanced Batteries, Accumulators and Fuel Cells. He is a founding member and chairman of the Czech Battery Cluster, which was established in 2022 and gathers companies and universities across the battery value chain. He was designated to the position of university coordinator for the area of Energy Storage at Brno University of Technology in July 2023. He has participated in several national and international projects as project leader or co-investigator, including the EIT Urban Mobility SEVES project led by Škoda Auto.
