Ian is a Senior Research Fellow on the Immersive Software Engineering [ISE] team, with a focus on industry collaboration with ISE commercial partners thanks to his combination of academic and commercial IT experience.

Ian has more than 20 years’ experience in commercial IT as a Software Engineer, Scrummaster, and Project Manager, across diverse domains including finance, the motor industry, forestry, telecommunications & automated soundtrack composition systems, and companies ranging from large multinationals through Irish SMEs and technology start-ups. Most recently Ian spent 7 years managing the IT graduate training and intern programs in Fidelity Investments, so moving to a role to create an innovative new industry-intensive software engineering degree seemed a natural progression.

Academic experience includes a B.A.I. degree in Computer Engineering from Trinity College Dublin, an MSc in Music Technology from the University of Limerick, and a PhD in Computational Musicology completed in the Interaction Design Centre in UL, before taking up computer science Postdoc positions with the CNGL C-SET, researching software localisation technologies, and most recently in Lero on the Covigilant project with a focus on gathering evidence to inform and optimise Ireland’s digital contact-tracing strategy and practice in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
