The journalism department hosted an end of year 'Research Showcase' celebration of outstanding academic and journalism work carried out by their students over the past 12 months. It was the first of what is intended to be an annual event and included short presentations from faculty, PHD, MA and BA students. End of year awards were also given to students who had made a particular contribution to the subject over the past year.

Dr Fergal Quinn said the event is intended to draw attention to the range of work being done by students and staff in the department.

"We have a proud history of celebrating our student successes in industry or the various awards they receive for journalism output. This event is intended to place at the centre of these efforts the research component of this work. We try to prepare our students to ‘work-ready’ but we also want to inculcate the importance of rigorous and thorough research practice. This encompasses critical engagement with media output itself, where we question and interrogate the norms and practices of journalism work, its political economic dynamics, its ethics etc. "
