Poster for New York Gathering
Monday, 8 April 2024

We are thrilled to reconnect with you as we prepare for our first event in New York since 2019. It's been too long and we're eager to see familiar faces and welcome new ones. Join us in Midtown Manhattan on 18 April for our next gathering, exclusively for graduates and friends of University of Limerick.

The event, titled 'Finding Facts in the Age of Disinformation', promises to be both timely and thought-provoking. In an era where misinformation and fake news abound, it is essential to delve into the pivotal role of investigative journalism in countering these narratives and uncovering the truth. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Malachy Browne will be in conversation with Dr Audrey Galvin, exploring the critical importance of rigorous journalism in navigating today's information landscape. Laura Ryan, Director of Marketing, Communications, and Public Affairs at UL will also be in attendance and looks forward to personally welcoming you to this event.

Malachy Browne's remarkable career as an investigative journalist at The New York Times, leading the Visual Investigations Unit, highlights the power of merging traditional reporting with digital forensics to expose truths and challenge authority. His team's groundbreaking work, such as uncovering atrocities in Bucha, Ukraine and shedding light on Breonna Taylor's killing, underscores the profound impact investigative journalism can have on public discourse, policy, and accountability. Malachy received a UL Alumni Award in 2023 for his outstanding work.

Dr Audrey Galvin, a former broadcast journalist turned academic researcher, brings a unique perspective to the conversation. Her expertise in media representation and production, coupled with her in-depth study of narratives surrounding murder-suicide in Ireland, adds depth to our exploration of how the media constructs and disseminates stories today.

This event couldn't be more relevant, especially during an American election cycle where the spread of misinformation can have profound implications for democracy. Join us as we delve into the challenges and opportunities of finding facts within the noise of disinformation at 6pm on 18 April at WorkHouse NYC, 21 W 46th St.

Please register and reserve your spot for what promises to be an engaging and enlightening evening.
