Mr Peter Real

Limerick man, Peter Real received a first class honours Bachelors Degree in Electronic Systems from the National Institute for Higher Education, now the University of Limerick, in 1981 and joined Analog Devices (ADI) in Limerick as a graduate design engineer. Although he never ceased to think of himself primarily as an engineer, Peter’s influence and impact has spanned the far broader domains of innovator, technology collaborator, business leader, mentor, and visionary. His many accomplishments, (including as holder of nine patents in the domains of data converters, hard disk drive technology, and RF products), not only impacted ADI and its employees, but also the wider global engineering community.

Peter’s early integrated circuit design work was focused on pioneering switched capacitor technology in data convertors, a semiconductor product category in which ADI had built a leadership position based on precision thin film resistor technology. Later in his design career, Peter led a team that developed ADI’s first pipe-lined high-speed analog-to-digital converter. This important product introduction further enhanced ADI’s leadership position in an increasingly pivotal technology area that enabled applications in the consumer and communications markets.

In recognition of Peter’s consistent focus on driving technology leadership and business growth, his career trajectory encompassed many roles including responsibility for ADI’s Linear Products business in 2009 and in 2014, he was appointed to the role of Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO), becoming only the second person in ADI’s history to fill this influential position.

Peter strongly promoted collaborative researchps and activities to develop the technologies and competencies necessary to gain and maintain competitive advantage in a range of markets. He also expanded the reach of the CTO’s office by establishing the Technology Advisory Council. Furthermore, Peter played a significant role in creating a robust engineering culture at ADI and was instrumental in the establishment of the Analog Garage as ADI’s innovation incubator. He was also a very strong advocate for Diversity and Inclusion at ADI.

Finally, Peter played a key role in two of ADI’s most significant acquisitions. His strong presence as a technologist, paired with his keen understanding of human nature, were important contributors in the successful acquisition and integration of Hittite Microwave Products in 2014, while his calm demeanor influenced the tenor of the discussions with Linear Technology Corporation (LTC) in 2017, motivating all parties to consider disparate points of view and address challenges in a constructive manner.engagements with leading universities worldwide (this included support of the B.Eng. Electronic & Computer Engineering programme at the University of Limerick, through equipment donations and scholarships) and his vision of building and expanding a research agenda in Ireland led to close collaboration with Science Foundation Ireland. Furthermore, Peter authored numerous cited publications, including IEEE Journals and magazines and as an articulate and thoughtful speaker, Peter was much sought after at both national and International conferences. 

Peter Real's ability to persuasively present the strategic value of acquisitions, and his guidance in navigating the challenges of integrating those acquisitions, has helped transform ADI into the industry’s premier global analog leader. This capability to imagine new possibilities, and to persuade others to join him in creating that reality, is a defining characteristic of Peter’s professional endeavors. His remarkable career and legacy will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration and a model for future generations of aspiring engineers and business leaders.

Peter passed away in August 2019 following an illness. He is survived by his wife, Marian and their two daughters, Deirdre and Una.  Peter's alumni award was graciously accepted by Marian to a standing ovation.
