On Wednesday, 23rd April 2025, our first-year Electrical Engineering students had the exciting opportunity to visit Killonan Substation, located in Co. Limerick. This site visit was generously facilitated by H&MV Engineering, the main contractor overseeing the major upgrade works of the 220 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation on behalf of ESB Networks.
Throughout the visit, students were given a comprehensive tour of the substation, gaining first-hand exposure to the complexities and challenges involved in large-scale electrical infrastructure projects. H&MV Engineering provided valuable insights into key engineering practices, project management strategies, and rigorous safety protocols essential for working on high-voltage systems.
The experience allowed students to see theoretical concepts from their coursework applied in a real-world environment, deepening their understanding of power systems, substation design, and the role of innovation in modern energy networks. It also highlighted the importance of collaboration between engineers, contractors, and utility providers in delivering critical national infrastructure.
Visits like these are an integral part of our programme's commitment to blending academic learning with industry engagement, preparing our students to become the next generation of engineering leaders.
We would like to sincerely thank H&MV Engineering and ESB Networks for hosting our students and for their continued support of engineering education.
