Graduate profiles

I have always been interested in current affairs, geopolitics, and how people are kept informed when it comes to diplomacy etc. As a result, I had a natural leaning towards journalism, as I felt it would be a career that combined both my love for history and storytelling.

Katie Harrington studied BA in New Media and English at the University of Limerick and graduated in 2009. She is now a freelance content and communications strategist, working in Dublin. In this blog post she talks about her time at UL and her move into freelance work.

I was very fortunate to be interviewed for my current job in my final semester at UL. My interview was successful and so I was able to plan for starting my full-time job one week after finishing college.

This course appealed to me because I was always very interested in news and current affairs. I wanted to advance my writing and broadcast skills so that I could tell stories in a creative and effective manor. I was also excited about the opportunity to study and work abroad during Third Year.

I think my work placement in third year was a real awakening for me. My degree prepared me well but, you never really know what it’s actually like until you get hands-on experience.

UL really has something for everyone! Whether its being part of a group, a club, a society, having your own radio show, writing for An Focal, working with the marketing team for events to promote them on social media, volunteering, there really was 1000 ways to meet new people. There was a place for everyone, no matter what it was you were interested in being part of.

Many law graduates use their degree internationally to pursue highly successful careers in a range of diverse fields, from diplomacy to research, advocacy to financial services. My favourite part of my course was how varied it was. The six months spent on co-op shaped my future career, and I thoroughly enjoyed the semester studying in Manchester on Erasmus. The modules in the course itself ranged from computer science modules to journalism and technical writing. The more practical modules have also stood to me in the workplace.

Niamh Dillon graduated from UL with a BA in Politics and Sociology (Joint Honours) in 2016. This was followed by an MA in Sociology (Youth, Community and Social Regeneration) in January of this year. Here she talks about her time at UL:
