Postgraduate Research Funding

The Faculty of AHSS is a vibrant, outward-looking faculty that combines intensive research activity with the strongest commitment to high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Postgraduate scholarships available


Politics and Public Administration:

  • For students who hold SUSI grants, equivalent to 50% of an EU fee waiver. Find out more here.


LLM/MA (Human Rights in Criminal Justice):
  • Judge Michael Reilly Scholarship: 33% fee waiver open to an Garda Síochána.
  • 2x 33% fee waiver open to an Garda Síochána. 
LLM (International Commercial Law)
  • 50% fee waiver.
  • Eversheds, Solicitors: The international corporate law firm offers a very generous scholarship to the student registering for the LLM in September 2019  with the highest undergraduate degree award. 
LLM (General)
  • 50% fee waiver.
Online MA (Human Rights in Criminal Justice)
  • 14 x fee waivers for candidates from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs.

Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics

  • 4x 50% fee waivers for taught MA programmes. As part of the award, the successful candidate must complete two hours of teaching per week per semester. 

English, Irish, and Communication

  • 2x competitive €1,000 part-fee waivers to the MA in English. 

Irish World Academy of Music and Dance

PPC Scholarship
  • 2x residential scholarships to support postgraduate research students. 
Academy Comhaimseratha Fee Waivers
  • 2x full research EU fee waivers to PhD students. Successful applicants will provide editorial support towards the compilation and publication of the IWA’s biannual Comhaimseartha/Of Our Times brochure.
Fee waiver
  • A limited number of full and/or partial fee waivers for research students at MA and PhD level. Distributed on an annual basis, the decision will be made by the Academy Director. 
RTÉ Lyric FM Scholarships
  • A scholarship for talented string players who wish to study at UL. Recipients may be required to engage in work at the Academy, aimed towards professional development. 
Universal Music UK Sound Foundation
  • A Bursary in Community Music is available to an IWA student from Universal Music UK Sound Foundation, the independent charity. 
Roche Continents – Youth! Arts! Science! 
  • 100 students across Europe, aged 20-29, are selected to attend concerts and talks, to join discussions with artists, and take part in group workshops exploring the common ground of innovation and creativity in the arts and science. 
Stepping Stones Scholarship
  • 3x €1,000 general scholarships for IWA students on taught MA programmes. Students must have a demonstrable record in a performance and/or academic specialisation relevant to a programme of study at the Academy.
