Biography

Hello, my name is Ciara Lane. I studied for my degree in English and Mathematical Studies in University College Cork (UCC). After graduating with my BA in 2007, I became interested in Mathematics Education and particularly, in post-primary education. As such, I completed my PhD in Mathematical Studies under the supervision of Prof. Martin Stynes (UCC); Prof. John O’Donoghue (University of Limerick); and Dr. Tom Carroll (UCC). The title of my thesis was: The Image of Mathematics held by Post-Primary Students in Ireland. Since receiving my doctorate I have been working here in UL, and most recently since September 2014, I have been based in EPI*STEM. My research interests remain in the area of affective, cognitive and conative issues, i.e. attitudes, self-concept, anxiety, beliefs and motivation regarding mathematics. Since working with pre-service mathematics teachers and out-of-field mathematics teachers through my work in UL and EPI*STEM, I hope to combine my prior research with my current interest in mathematics teaching, particularly in the area of out-of-field teachers. If you would like to contact me about my research or with regards to these research topics, please feel free to email me at: Ciara.Lane@ul.ie

Research Interests

My research to date has been based on the area of students' images of mathematics (attitudes, self-concept, anxiety, motivation and beliefs regarding mathematics). As well as investigating the components that combine to form a student's image of mathematics, my research also examined the factors influencing this image formation.
Since receiving my PhD in February 2013, I have written two papers, (one published, one submitted) and also presented at the MEI5 Conference in Dublin on the findings from my research.
Since working in UL, I have been mainly working in the area of mathematics education, with pre-service teachers, out-of-field teachers and in-service mathematics teachers. In particular, I am hoping to start a new research project that will combine my previous research area with that of out-of-field mathematics teachers.
