Congratulations to Dr Walter Stanley, School of Engineering and the Department of Chemical Sciences, PhD Student, Mariana Silva for winning the Limerick heat of the FameLab International Ireland!!

Walter is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical/Aeronautical engineering at UL. He has over 25years’ experience (started at the young age of 8...ahem) specifically in the area of stress analysis ('to which my students will attest and suffer'), composite materials manufacture and mechanical testing. And of course his other main passion is aeroplanes ('not flying of course...driving a car is exertion enough...as other road users may testify ').

Mariana, originally from Portugal, came to Ireland as part of her PhD programme as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow . Her research focuses on developing a method to produce tiny particles of drug molecules that have the potential to transform daily pills. It will make them a thing of the past by turning them into an injectable that treats a condition for months! Outside the lab, Mariana enjoys reading and is fascinated by outerspace. Watch Mariana's FameLabTalk:https://lnkd.in/evRtFpW4

FameLab, the world’s leading science communication competition, held in more than 30 countries, the British Council and Cheltenham Festivals have teamed up to bring it to Ireland for the ninth and very last time in 2021 – and once again this year you can watch from the comfort of your own home! Armed only with their wits and a few props, the top newest voices in science, technology, engineering and maths from across Ireland will give 3 minute talks on always fascinating, sometimes bizarre science concepts.

Presentations will then be judged according to FameLab’s golden rule – the 3 Cs: Content, Clarity and Charisma.

The winner of FameLab Ireland will then go on to represent the nation at the FameLab International Finals in November 2021.
