ISO/IEC JTC 1 is the global standardization authority in the area of information technology. This committee has been created in 1987 and traditionally the standardization work this prestigious committee has been performing was siloed in distinct subcommittees. Currently, the newest JTC 1 subcommittee is SC 42 Artificial Intelligence. Out of the 42 subcommittees JTC 1 has created in its lifetime, 22 are currently active. This is still a large number of interconnected and intertwined standardisation scopes. Moreover, JTC 1 doesn’t manage only its internal liaisons but serves as an IT standardization authority for the whole ISO, IEC, and actually also ITU ecosystem.

Due to the interconnectedness of areas and scopes in modern IT standardization, JTC 1 had to revisit its traditional siloed approach. This manifested as 1) Introducing the notion of a System Integration Entity (SIE), (typically) a subcommittee that provides horizontal deliverables in its area of expertise that cover the relevant specialist aspects of that area for all other ISO and IEC committees (including of course its sister subcommittees). 2) creating a large number of temporary JTC 1 level study, advisory, and working groups that are mandated with exploring an area before a more permanent standardization homes can be found or created.

In this talk I will focus on the newest JTC 1 Subcommittee, the SC 42 and on how trustworthiness and transparency are the biggest current topics in global ICT standardization. I will explain how this is being addressed by Trustworthiness groups at SC (SC 42/WG 3 Trustworthiness of AI) and JTC 1 levels (JTC 1/AG 7 Trustworthiness), and more widely also how JTC 1 aims to embrace IT standardization transparency and rapid adoption by exploring possible engagement with the world of Open Source Software (JTC 1/AG 3 OSS).
